By Jayashika Padmasiri Following the enactment of the 19th Amendment, popular civil organisation, the Puravasi Balaya, yesterday said that it would continue its struggle and pressurise the Government to abolish the Executive Presidency. Addressing a news conference yesterday in Colombo, Ravaya newspaper Editor K.W. Janaranjana said that one of the main criticisms they had concerning the 19th Amendment was that the Opposition introduced amendments to the Constitution that were not in the public interest. “We are against the Opposition succeeding to implement amendments that are against the people such as increasing the number of Parliamentarians and reducing the number of professionals on the Constitutional Council. Therefore, we will pressurise the Government and not stop our struggle till these amendments made to the Constitution are changed because such amendments have robbed the Constitution of its apolitical nature,” he said. Commenting on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, Janaranjana added that a new electoral system was necessary for the country and that the Puravasi Balaya was eagerly waiting to see what would be introduced finally as the 20th Amendment while stating that it would work towards getting the 20th Amendment implemented in the best way possible for the people.
