Radiation tests prove negative

Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Authorities say that so far no radioactive materials have been found in the test carried out by them and that testing of rainwater samples collected throughout the country is in progress.

A centre for radiation monitoring has been set up at the Peradeniya University to test radiation levels in the atmosphere, in order to determine whether the explosions at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan has had an impact on Sri Lanka.

In the first phase the air is inspected and filtered while data is examined through a computerised mechanism. The Head of Department of Physics Dr. Nimal Hettiarachchi stated that they intend to carryout continuous radiation tests.

 “There is no need for unnecessary panic as the tests carried out so far for radiation have proved negative,” the Atomic Energy Authority announced.
