Deputy Minister of Education, Monitoring MP for the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development and MP for Colombo District Mohan Lal Grero, considering the request made by Maharagama Deputy Mayor Sunil Kodituwakku and the Old Boys Association together with community to preserve and develop the school initiated action to restore the school with his own funds.
Grero made efforts to fully modernise the Montessori of the college and employed trained staff with necessary facilities, providing opportunities for children to have free education.
At the occasion of handing over the Montessori to the children, Grero said: “This school is a resource to the area. The request made by Deputy Mayor Sunil Kodituwakku is not his private request. It is a request of the people to preserve the school. A Cabinet Memorandum was submitted by the Ministry of Education asking for funds to develop seven selected schools in Colombo District. I was able to include this school as the second in the list after exerting much effort and with strong justification.”
“I believe that we will be able to improve Rahula College into one of the most popular and developed schools benefitting the children in Maharagama, Baddegana, Pitakotte, Thalawathugoda and adjoining areas. There is no need for parents to look for popular schools from 2015 onwards. On par with Government interventions, I have personally concluded the plan to attach capable teachers for English and other relevant subject areas to provide better education that can build up children for the future. Arrangements are being made to convert this school to the reputed level of its past with facilities to conduct Advanced Level classes within a short time span. In view of the above, parents should not have any fear. They can admit their children into this school for 2015,” he added.
Kodituwakku stated that Grero was not a Minister working for fame and that he had fulfilled the request made by community without limiting it to a mere promise. “His performance sets an example for other ministers and deputy ministers. For his effort in converting this school into a popular school, I extend my gratitude to Grero on behalf of the parents and old boys of the school.”
Principal Nissanka Rathnayake, office bearers of the Old Boys Association and parents of the Montessori children participated in the event, following which Grero made inquiries about the other needs of the school.
