Ranil-Rathana Thero talks on executive presidency

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) MP, the Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thero had talks on common national issues, including the abolishing of the executive presidential system yesterday. Rathana Thero said that the meeting with the UNP Leader was part of a series of discussions he was holding with other political parties as well, including the JVP. The JHU MP said that talks with the UNP Leader had been productive and a debate can now begin using some of the ideas expressed and exchanged at yesterday’s discussion and discussions held with others. Rathana Thero said the ideas exchanged at the talks will be used to formulate proposals which will address national issues. Meanwhile the monk also welcomed the holding of presidential elections soon saying such an election will help policy decisions to be taken. UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe meanwhile said that abolishing the Executive Presidency was among the issues discussed at the meeting with the JHU monk. He said that an alternative to the Executive Presidency was also discussed. (Colombo Gazette)
