Opposition United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe says only a handful of Buddhists and Muslims both inside and outside Sri Lanka are extremists. Speaking at an event yesterday the UNP Leader also blamed the Government for the spread of religious extremism inside the country. Wickremesinghe noted that religious extremism has become a global threat to reconciliation and coexistence among communities. “These are not issues we can solve by breaking houses. We must discuss these issues and work towards reconciliation,” he said. Wickremesinghe said that while a majority of the people wants to live together there are a few who feel otherwise and spread extremism. The UNP Leader said that in Sri Lanka the Mahinda Rajapaksa Government is the cause for the religious issues and so his Government must be removed. Wickremesinghe stressed that there is a need to protect coexistence among the religious communities and a step towards that direction the existing Government must be removed. (Colombo Gazette)
