Leader of Sri Lanka’s main Opposition United National Party (UNP) Ranil Wickremesinghe says the party will form 161 battalions during its Annual Convention today, 1 December.

Addressing party members at a meeting organised by Provincial Councillors M.S.M. Fairoos and Mujibhur Rahuman, the UNP Leader has said that the battalions would be formed in order to work towards ousting the Rajapaksa regime.

He has noted that the statement by the UNP at the convention over the radical changes to be made with regard to bringing back the party to power will highlight the plans to form a just and equitable society entrenched with democratic rights. The party would put both these concepts for approval at the convention.

“From that point onwards, we are going to start our march towards victory. The Government may try to undermine our victorious march. There might be Trojan horses within our party ranks to undermine us. Let us move forward as one single force. We will set in place our youth, women and UNP branch offices to bolster our march forward,” Wickremesinghe has vowed.

“We must boot out the corrupt Rajapaksa regime and set up our own government in place soon,” he has urged the members.

He also added that the people are burdened with the escalating cost of living. “The UNP thought that the Government would grant people some relief through the Budget. But the people have been given Lamborghinis instead of bringing down the cost of living. Now we have Lamborghini racing cars and Supreme Sat satellites which the poor ordinary people never asked for,” he has said.

According to Wickremesinghe, there is no option other than having a UNP government and it is only the UNP that can lock horns with this corrupt Government.
