Ravaviru month declared

The Ministry of Defence and Urban Development has declared the month starting from 30 April to 30 May as the ‘Ranaviru Month’ (War Heroes Commemoration Month) to commemorate war heroes of armed forces and Police.

The first Ranaviru Flag will be pinned onto President Mahinda Rajapaksa at a ceremony on 30 April at the Temple Trees when he will launch the War Heroes Commemoration Month.

A series of events has been scheduled to be held to mark the War Hero Commemoration month including the Victory Parade at Galle Face Green and War Hero commemoration at the Ranaviru Monument near the parliamentary complex at Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte.

The President will observe the victory parade on 18 May at 10a.m. at the Galle Face Green.

The national war hero commemoration will be held on 19 May at 4p.m. at the Ranaviru Monument.

The Ranaviru Month is held to mark Sri Lanka’s victory over the Tamil Tiger Terrorist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The Sri Lankan armed forces defeated the LTTE on 18 May, 2009 and eliminated the terrorism that plagued the country for three decades.
