The Government says it has suspended the construction work on the new Army Headquarters in Athurugiriya. Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake said that the decision was taken based on the cost being spent on the new military facility. The new Army Headquarters was being constructed in order to shift the existing Army Headquarters located at Galle Face. Karunanayake said that money has already been spent on the construction work of the new army complex but the balance money could be spent to construct homes for needy people. The Finance Minister questioned the former Defence Secretary on the procedure followed to approve the funds for the project and where the funds came from. (Colombo Gazette)
