The re launching ceremony of Crescent magazine will be held on 26 June 2014 at 4 p.m. at the College Gaffoor Hall under the patronage of Principal of the College Trizvi Marikkar. Jamiah Naleemiah Institute Director Dr. M.A.M. Shukri will be the guest speaker.
Crescent magazine is the official publication of Zahira College which was started by Dr. T.B. Jayah when he was the Principal. The first issue of this magazine came to light in June 1922. It was a monthly publication at the beginning. At first it was an eight page pamphlet printed in rough demy paper and was sold at ten cents, each. Later, that became quarterly and then annually. The last issue was in 1946, when the college commemorated her Golden Jubilee.
In the year 1949 it was submerged in ‘Az Zahira’ – a yearly record and review of the activities of Zahira College, Colombo during the Principal Dr. Aziz’s period.
However, Crescent magazine again re appeared during the 75th Anniversary of the founding of Zahira. That was in 1967 and then for a few years there was no record of publication of Crescent Magazine.
However, the Crescent never gave up; it emerges now after almost five decades. This is a magazine which tells us about the activities of the college while recording the history. The editorial board which consists of the staff and the students intend to continue with this publication initially annually and then biannually. Professor Tuley De Silva, a distinguished old boy, is reviewing this historic magazine of the college, as The Crescent celebrates its 92nd birthday, this year.
