Recommendations on traffic fines to Cabinet this week

A paper recommending imposition of a Rs. 25,000 fine for a number of road rule violations will be presented to Cabinet this week.

Along with the hike in fines the paper will also include a number of other measures to be taken to improve road safety, Transport and Civil Aviation Ministry Secretary Nihal Somaweera told Daily FT.

The paper will recommend imposing Rs. 25,000 fines for drunk driving, driving without licence or insurance and employing individuals without valid licence as drivers.

“We have also recommended the minimum fine for speeding to be increased to Rs. 3,000, and if the vehicle speeds exceed the imposed speed limit by 50% the fine imposed will be Rs. 25,000,” Somaweera said. The final report and recommendations on increasing fines for traffic offences formulated by a committee appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena was handed over.

The Budget proposal 2017 suggested the minimum fine for violating road rules to be increased to Rs. 25,000, with the objective of preventing road accidents. However due to the opposition by people against this, the President appointed a committee to look into the matter.
