Reprieved UNP MPs summoned before Leadership Council today

The United National Party Leadership Council has decided to meet with errant MPs Palitha Range Bandara and Asoka Abeysinghe today, when the Council convenes for its third meeting at the Parliamentary Complex. Range Bandara and Abeysinghe were given a reprieve by the Council when it met for the first time last week. Disciplinary inquiries against the MPs for flouting party orders were suspended and their organiser posts were restored by the Council. The two MPs would be summoned before the Council for discussions today, the UNP announced in a statement issued yesterday. The decision was reached during the second meeting of the UNP Leadership Council which met at the Parliamentary Complex yesterday. The Council has also decided to begin fund raising activities for the next set of elections and conduct workshops with electoral organisers at provincial level in the coming days. The Council decided to conduct an assessment of current electoral organisers of the Party by appointing three monitors to observe performances in each electorate. The monitors would be drawn from the UNP’s ex- Parliamentarians group, university lecturers, advisory committee and youth groups, a statement from the UNP said. The first electoral organiser workshops will be held in the North Central Province on 7 December, with the second scheduled for 15 December in the Southern Province. The Leadership Council meeting yesterday was chaired by Chairman Karu Jayasuriya and was attended by UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, Chairman Kabir Hashim and MPs Mangala Samaraweera, Lakshman Kiriella, Ravi Karunanayake and Ruwan Wijewardene.
