The Chairman of the Central Provincial Council Mahinda Abeykoon was yesterday sentenced to two and a half years of rigorous imprisonment by the Kandy High Court for violating election laws. This judgment was passed when the case, in which the Chairman and 13 others were accused of perpetrating an incident of election violence, was heard by Judge Menaka Wijesundara. The judge acquitted 11 suspects who had been indicted in the case. The case was heard in the absence of two of the accused as they passed away before the judgment. Abeykoon was sentenced on three counts including unlawful assembly during the general election in 2001. He was elected Chairman of the Central Provincial Council on 9 October 2013.
