The Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa, inaugurated the Provincial Road Development Project of the Galle District yesterday (20). The project was launched by the Southern Provincial Council with funding from the Ministry of Economic Development under the 2011 budget proposal.
A stretch of 310 kms of provincial roads in the Galle District are to be developed and carpeted under this programme and the total cost of the project has been estimated to be Rs. 3100 million.
Acting on the instructions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa initiated the Provincial Road Development Project in order to create a good road network islandwide. Under this programme a stretch of 3740 kms of road will be developed and carpeted in all district of the island during 2011. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs.22, 000 million.
The proposed development includes carpeting of roads, improvement of pavements, bridges, drainage, and replacement of culverts.
Minister Basil Rajapaksa inaugurated the carpeting of an alternative road behind the Elipitiya bus stand and the road from Pahala Omantha junction to Katapola in the Benthara- Elpitiya electorate.
