Rs. 24 m from Japan to build Central School Building in Kilinochchi District

The Japanese Government has provided a grant of $ 185,425 (Rs. 24 million) for ‘The Project for Construction of a Central School Building in Kilinochchi District’ under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project scheme (GGP). ‘The Project for Construction of Central School Building in Kilinochchi District’ will be implemented by ZOA. The project aims to construct a two-storeyed building with furniture and sanitary facilities for the existing 799 students and 38 teachers and to increase access to education among the future children of the area and accommodate students in adjoining villages as well. The construction of latrines and bathroom facilities will enhance sanitation practices among children while the provision of furniture for the school will improve its learning environment and quality of education.

The Japanese Government believes that the recovery of livelihood and economic growth of the people who live in poverty-stricken areas, need to be complemented by infrastructure rehabilitation. An integrated approach in this nature will pave the way to durable peace and inclusive development in all parts of the country in the long-run. ZOA Countery Director Guido de Vries stated: “ZOA is immensely proud that with the assistance of the Japanese Grassroots funding, the access and quality of the facilities of the Central Primary school in Kilinochchi will be improved. Currently, the school has stopped accepting new students due to a lack of space. This project will allow the school to not only better cater to new children in the community but create a better space for its current students.” The grant contract was signed between Japan Ambassador Nobuhito Hobo and ZOA Country Director Guido de Vries on 16 March at the Ambassador’s Residence in Colombo.

Japan extends Rs. 10 m to improve water, sanitation and hygiene in Nuwara Eliya District

The Government of Japan has provided a $ 77,714 (Rs. 10 million) grant for ‘The Project for Improving the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in the Nuwara Eliya District’ under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project scheme (GGP). ‘The Project for Improving the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in the Nuwara Eliya District’ will be implemented by ADRA Sri Lanka. The project aims to improve the living standards and health status of

underprivileged tea estate workers in four communities in the estates of Nuwara Eliya, specially targeting women and children, through the provision of safe drinking water (with gravity-fed water systems) and the creation of awareness through training in hygiene and sanitation. Japan is providing assistance for this project under the banner of ‘Mitigating of Vulnerability’ of the Country Assistance Policy for Sri Lanka. The Government of Japan is committed to reducing the vulnerability of underprivileged and marginalised people by improving their accessibility to services, education, employment, etc, which in turn will result in the empowerment of these vulnerable groups making them active contributors to Sri Lanka’s development initiatives. ADRA Sri Lanka Country Director Jayandra Seneviratne stated: “The development of this project has been collaborative, with the Alton Estate community, estate management, local authorities, engineers, the Japanese Embassy in Sri Lanka and ADRA Sri Lanka being involved in the process. This collaboration has promoted local ownership and local government recognition towards the proposed project. The project will also conduct participatory health and sanitation training in the communities during the construction. ADRA Sri Lanka joined the Alton Estate community in thanking the people of Japan for their grant.
