RTI ensures democracy in SL: Karu

The Right To Information (RTI) Act has uplifted Sri Lanka to the top of countries that follow democracy noted Speaker Karu Jayasuriya.

Speaking at an awards ceremony held in Colombo recently fgjJayasuriya said the RTI Act has empowered modern media to ensure transparency of an incident without spreading rumors. 

“The media has become a main component of ruling the county. It supports the flow of internal politics than external politics. Considering some incidents happened recently we can realise how much social media influenced the Government’s decisions,” he stated. The Speaker stressed all media streams should be used only for quality purposes and should not be a weapon to tarnish images of others.

“I saw most blog sites in Sri Lanka were gathering for humanitarian purposes and lodged online petitions before the Government to get its attention. We believe it was indicated the progressed usage of social media,” he noted.

Commenting on the future moves of the Government, Jayasuriya said it expects to bring technology closer to youth in remote areas. 

He also said the society should learn to bear with the social changes occurred due to the technology resolution. (CG)
