Russia has expressed its full support to Sri Lanka in its efforts to face challenges posed by the international community. This assurance has been given by the Deputy Speaker of the Russian Parliament (Duma) Sergey Zheleznjak who is on a visit to Sri Lanka with a Russian Delegation. At a meeting held with the Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody in the parliament complex yesterday the Russian Deputy Speaker has said that the main purpose of his visit was to further strengthen the bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Russia. Commending Sri Lanka’s impressive economic growth Zheleznjak has said that his government is willing to extend support whenever necessary to further strengthen the friendly ties between the two countries. He has said that he would encourage the Russian entrepreneurs to invest in Sri Lanka. Zheleznjak has said that the opinion of certain countries on Sri Lanka is not correct at all times as a reconciliation process of its own is being operated in Sri Lanka. He has said that Sri Lanka should be allowed to take its own decisions on the reconciliation process. Praising the development drive launched in Sri Lanka under the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Russian speaker has said that he was fortunate to join in the country’s Independence Day commemoration at a time when all communities in the country were fully reaping the benefits of the peaceful environment after ending terrorism. The Russian Deputy Speaker has also said that Sri Lanka should have its own mechanism to take decisions suited to Sri Lanka after defeating terrorism in order to implement the development and reconciliation activities.
