Russia launches probe into Lankan embassy worker, shooting of diplomat

The Russian authorities have launched an investigation onto the death of a Sri Lankan attached to the Sri Lankan Embassy in Russia, the Voice of Russia reported.
The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that an employee of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Russia died on the night of 11 June in Rostov-on-Don as a result of a conflict with employees of a transport company engaged in transporting the baggage of a Sri Lankan delegation, which had arrived in this city, a statement posted on the Ministry’s website says.
Noel Ranaweera, a locally recruited Sri Lankan from Ukraine, died when the driver of a lorry ran over an administrative-technical employee of the Embassy. Second Secretary of the Sri Lankan diplomatic mission, Nuwan Ratnayake, received a traumatic injury to the chest,” the report says.
Ratnayake is the son of Government Minister C.B. Ratnayake, according to External Affairs Ministry sources. The Voice of Russia reported that one suspect has been detained over the incident and investigations continue.
The delegation from Sri Lanka came to Rostov-on-Don in the framework of the “Days of Sri Lanka in Russia” program. The delegation was planning to stay at one of the hotels in the center of Rostov-on-Don. (Colombo Gazette)
