Russia says Sri Lanka’s support vital in battling ISIS threats

Sri Lanka’s experience is important in the elimination of terrorism from the world, the Vice Chairman of the Council of Federation of Russia’s upper house of parliament Ilyas Umakhanov said this week.

Addressing a function organised at the Parliamentary Complex, the Russian official said that the support of the Sri Lankan Parliament is vital in the battle waged against ISIS terrorists.

A delegation from Russia headed by Umakhanov visited the Parliament yesterday. The delegation paid a courtesy call on Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, at Parliamentary complex and attended a luncheon meeting hosted by the Deputy Speaker Thilanga Sumathipala, with Members of the Sri Lanka-Russia Parliamentary Friendship Association. The delegation also called on Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera.

The Russian delegation participated in a function organised for the launch of the ‘Thilanga in Parliament’ which includes speeches made by the Deputy Speaker in Parliament. The event was held under the auspices of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
