The National Salaries Commission, appointed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa last November, said it will submit an interim report to the Government prior to the preparation of the budget proposals. Chairman of the Commission Nevil Piyadigama said the interim report, which is to include the recommendations on salaries and pensions, will be presented either next month or in the beginning of October. The 19-member Commission appointed by the President to replace the former National Salaries and Cadre Commission is soliciting the views and suggestions from the employees of public service, corporations and statutory boards to formulate a National Wage Policy. According to the Chairman, the Commission has received 660 proposals from the general public, the trade unions and numerous other organisations. He said the Commission was able to present an interim report even before completion of one year from setting up of the commission. The commission hopes to present the final report to the President in the first quarter of next year, the Chairman told the State-run radio. The new commission is also expected to recommend a new methodology for payment of pensions since the Government has a high pension bill. The President during his budget presentation last year noted that there is an urgent need to formulate a national wage policy due to the widening gap between public sector and private sector salaries.
