The Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that the expulsion of former United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Tissa Attanayake from the party was invalid as due process was not followed. The judgment was delivered when a petition filed by Attanayake was taken up before a bench comprising three judges including Justices Rohini Marasinghe. The court ruled that since a disciplinary inquiry had not been conducted or a charge sheet had not been filed against Attanayake, it was unjustifiable to make such a decision. The former UNP General Secretary, who pledged support to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa ahead of the presidential election, was expelled from the party following a decision taken by the UNP Working Committee.
