SEC fiasco a sign of lawlessness in the country – Harsha

UNP MP Dr. Harsha de Silva on Tuesday identified Sri Lanka as a country sans law and order elaborating on the recent SEC debacle.

“Within a period of one year two chairmen resigned at SEC. One happens to be the wife of the President’s Secretary Lalith Weerathunga. These past chairmen have found it difficult to work according to self-conscience. Recent past Chairman Thilak Karunaratne, a politician who was in the Sri Lanka Freedom Party with the President Mahinda Rajapakse had to resign and go home allowing the efforts taken to hide the investigations that will have exposed the 17 fraudsters. These fraudsters influenced Thilak Karunaratne using their high level political affiliations. I have the Hanzard of 6 March 1987, the day the former Finance Minister Ronnie de Mel brought the SEC Bill to the Parliament expecting that the particular bill will regulate the securities market in Sri Lanka and be a turning point in the further development and growth of business and finance. With frauds engineered by a mafia taking place, we can’t keep our mouth, eyes, and ears closed,” added Dr. de Silva.
