Seven Sri Lankans held in India for smuggling gold

Seven Sri Lankan nationals and an Indian have been arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for smuggling. They were in the city allegedly to smuggle 84 Swiss gold bars worth Rs 1.84 crore.

The suspects have been sent to judicial custody till 21 May. Three of the suspects, arrested from a South Mumbai hotel, confessed to smuggling gold from Colombo to India and led the investigating team to the other suspects who were staying illegally in the city. “The interrogation is complete. The prosecution asked for a judicial custody of all the eight accused. The Sri Lankans have given voluntary statements in Tamil, admitting to their role in the seizure of gold from Sri Lanka,” said special public prosecutor Fransis Saldanha. (Indian Express)
