Former Minister of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Wimal Weerawansa’s wife Shashi was granted bail yesterday by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court. Shashi Weerawansa was released on a personal bail of Rs. 500,000 and a cash bail of Rs. 15,000 under strict conditions after a motion requesting for bail was considered yesterday before the Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilipitiya. Sources revealed that though she was granted bail she has been ordered to report to the Court Registrar every Friday and to abstain from interfering with any of the witnesses of the case. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) apprehended Shashi Weerawansa last Sunday on charges of forging documents to obtain a diplomatic passport.

MR visits Shashi

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday visited Sashi Weerawansa in hospital to inquire into her well being. Soon after the visit, Rajapaksa said that the court has given a fair verdict, and complained that they need to protect politicians and their families from harassment. He also emphasized that they should put an end to political vengeance.
