A signature campaign will be held in Hulftsdorp today, to condemn the death threats issued against lawyers and judges who stood up to protect Judicial independence, the Lawyers’ Collective said yesterday. The campaign to collect signatures will take place at 11.30 a.m., the Collective added.
Lead Counsel for impeached Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake, Romesh De Silva PC, Senior Lawyer and Activist J.C. Weliamuna, Petitioner against the PSC Jayampathy Wickremaratne PC and TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran received threatening letters last week.
The UN and the EU have called on Sri Lanka to take steps to ensure the safety of the former Chief Justice and the legal activists who rallied against her removal.
