Singapore Foreign Minister arrives

Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Law K. Shanmugam arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday on a four-day official visit. Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Foreign Minister visiting Sri Lanka from 2-5 April will call on President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Colombo and meet his Sri Lankan counterpart Prof. G.L. Peiris. On 3 April, Shanmugam is scheduled to sign the revised Singapore-Sri Lanka Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement with Professor Peiris. The visiting Minister will also be taking part in a signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute for International Relations and Strategic Studies (LKIIRSS) and the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS) of Singapore. He will also officiate the launching of the Encyclopedia of the Sri Lankan Diaspora published by ISAS and participate in an interactive session with academics from the two think-tanks at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo. The visiting Minister and his delegation are scheduled to visit Jaffna in Northern Province where the Minister Shanmugam on April 4 will launch a year-long project on Enhancing Competency of English Language Communication. The initiative is spearheaded by the Singapore International Foundation (SIF), National Library Board and the Jaffna Public Library. He will also present a newly-refurbished Youth Resource Centre and Mobile Library Bus, sponsored by donors from Singapore, to the Jaffna Public Library. Shanmugam will be accompanied by senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
