The Sri Lankan Cultural and Education Centre under the patronage of the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Dubai organised a Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebration in Dubai. A large gathering of Sri Lankan families and community members from Dubai and Northern Emirates participated at the celebration. The major objective of this year’s celebration was to promote Sri Lankan traditions and customs among the different foreign community members as well as to create a festival environment among the Sri Lankan children who are born and brought up in UAE. To keep up with the community spirit, all Sri Lankan families overwhelmingly participated at this Sri Lankan event. A number of traditional games including ‘Avurudu Kumari’ and ‘Avurudu Kumara’ competitions were held with the participation of different contestants. Performance of Sri Lankan cultural items with traditional costume and preparation of authentic Sri Lankan food were highlights of the event. Consul General of Sri Lanka in Dubai Abdul Raheem ceremonially inaugurated the activities in the morning with lighting of the traditional oil lamp and visiting colourful Sri Lankan stalls.
