Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Japan, Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, recently called on Katsuya Okada, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister and currently the Leader of the Opposition’s the Democratic Party of Japan. Okada was elected as the Leader of the Opposition at Parliamentary Elections held in December 2014. Okada, during his tenure as the Deputy Prime Minister of Japan, visited Sri Lanka in 2012. During this visit he had the opportunity to conduct comprehensive discussions with a spectrum of political leaders in the country as well as visit the North, Vanni and Kandy. Ambassador Karannagoda, during the courtesy call with Okada, discussed a myriad of issues and ways to strengthen and deepen bilateral relations between the two countries. Okada stated that bilateral relations in all spheres between the two countries had reached the highest level with the recent visit of the Prime Minister of Japan to Sri Lanka. Ambassador Karannagoda expressed the gratitude of the Sri Lankan Government for all the assistance and cooperation extended by Japan, particularly when Okada was the Deputy Prime Minister. Since Ambassador Karannagoda will be leaving to Sri Lanka after the completion of his tour of duty, Okada placed on record that the bilateral relations were markedly deepened under his stewardship, thus benefitting the people of both countries.
