SL, Thailand sign cooperation deals

During a bilateral discussion held today with President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Thailand Prime Minister Yingluck Sinawatra has offered her government’s assistance to develop Sri Lanka’s agriculture, fisheries and education sectors.

President Rajapaksa who is on an official tour in Thailand met Prime Minister Shinwatra at the Prime Minister’s office Wednesday morning.

The two leaders held discussions on enhancing bilateral relations, especially in trade and investment, between the two countries, as well as on regional and multilateral issues.

President Rajapaksa has expressed satisfaction over the progress made by Thailand in fisheries and agriculture sectors and requested that country’s technical assistance to develop Sri Lanka’s fisheries and agriculture sectors. Prime Minister Sinawatra has proposed to set up a committee to further study this matter.

The President has apprised the Thai leader of Sri Lanka’s post- conflict development and invited Thai business leaders to take the business opportunities available in the country due to the conducive environment prevailing for businesses following the end of the war.

The Thai Prime Minister, recalling the historic relations between Sri Lanka and Thailand, has pointed out the importance of working closely in Buddhist and cultural affairs between the two countries.

President Rajapaksa has appreciated Thailand for the cooperation and support extended to Sri Lanka at the recent UNHRC sessions.

Following the meeting, two bilateral agreements have also been signed. External Affairs Ministry of Sri Lanka and the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Thailand signed a Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral political consultations and an agreement regarding exchanging of documentation on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.

Sri Lanka Ambassador in Thailand General Santha Kottegoda signed the agreements on behalf of Sri Lanka while the Thai Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul signed on behalf of Thailand.

Housing and Construction Minister Wimal Weerawansa was also present at the signing.
