SLFP amends Party Constitution

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Executive Committee, which met on Saturday, amended the Party Constitution and made changes to some positions in the party. Former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Chandrika Kumaratunga had been invited to attend the SLFP Executive Committee meeting but they had not turned up. SLFP General Secretary Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said that Rajapaksa and Kumaratunga had informed the party that they were unable to attend today’s meeting owing to some prior commitments. Yapa said that Rajapaksa had also assured, in a letter to the party that he will continue to be with the SLFP and support the new party leadership. At the SLFP Executive Committee meeting, the two former Presidents as well as former Prime Ministers from the SLFP were named advisors. Susil Premjayantha was named as the new National Organiser of the party replacing the seat made vacant by Basil Rajapaksa who resigned following the presidential elections defeat last month. Meanwhile, a protest took place outside the venue at Battaramulla where the SLFP Executive Committee met with some SLFP members demanding they want former President Mahinda Rajapaksa given a prominent spot. The protesters had also surrounded the vehicle of SLFP Provincial Council member Hirunika Premachandra before the Police cleared the area. SLFP member Rajitha Senaratne said that the SLFP would look at winning the next general election and committees were appointed in order to work towards that goal. (Colombo Gazette)
