The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) the main constituent of the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) yesterday celebrated its 60th anniversary on a grand scale under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees.
Addressing the ceremony President Rajapaksa said the prime objective at the moment of the SLFP led UPFA Government was to convince the Tamil, Muslim and other communities that they are not minorities and that Sri Lanka is one unified nation.
The President further said that the Government was never obliged to give ransoms or a part of the country to anyone to achieve the concept of one nation. He added that the SLFP was strong enough not to fall prey to separatist elements that try to raise their ugly heads once again.
General Secretary Minister Maithripala Sirisena, Party Treasurer Minister Dallas Alahapperuma and all other senior members participated.
The celebration was the high point of anniversary week declared from August 30 to September 5. A number of activities including a membership drive has been organised to mark the anniversary. According to SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena, religious observances, seminars and workshops on the party’s future and present vision will be held during the week. Several development programmes also will be declared open.
Senior Vice President of the SLFP Governor Alavi Moulana said that all the constituent party leaders in the UPFA government and their representatives had been invited to be present by UPFA General Secretary Minister Susil Premajayath.
The SLFP was founded by the 4th Prime Minister of Sri Lanka the late S.W.R.D Bandaranaike in 1951 and since then it has been one of the two largest parties in the Sri Lankan political arena. (news.lk)
