SLFP consents to national government

The Presidential Media Unit yesterday said that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has consented to the concept of a national government while also declaring that they will not go for a general election without enacting a new electoral system in the country. In a press statement issued by the Presidential Media Unit covering President Maithripala Sirisena’s participation at the SLFP workshop held

during the weekend this was announced. The statement said: “SLFP consented to work towards a national government in the future. However they also said that they have their conditions regarding this decision and that they will allow the party leaders to discuss about those conditions with the United National Party (UNP) and the other relevant parties.” The statement also said that during this workshop attention was given to the subject of making the necessary reforms in the executive presidency. Daily FT learns that that the present MPs had said that it was pointless to go for a general election without enacting a new electoral system in the country. According to reports President Sirisena addressing the workshop had told the SLFP MPs that during the last presidential election the people had given the SLFP the message that the party needs to change and that if the SLFP is not willing to adapt to these amendments then the SLFP will have to stay in the opposition for another 10-15 years.
