Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Secretary General and Minister Maithripala Sirisena yesterday said the party would declare its opinion on the 15 resolutions passed by the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) next week, after the resolutions were submitted to the Party’s central committee. He said they were already studying the resolutions and contents. “Though I’m the General Secretary, I cannot make an opinion on the resolutions. The resolutions will be submitted to the party central committee next week and the opinion of the SLFP will be announced later,” Minister Siripala told a news conference at the SLFP Headquarters in Colombo. The resolution was passed at the Fifteenth National Convention of the ITAK held in Vavuniya on 8 September. The Minister said that no provincial council or a political party could violate the Constitution of the country. “Not only has the north, but each provincial council has pledged to act within the Constitution of Sri Lanka. They cannot act against it,” he said. He also said the SLFP had not had discussions about a new constitution so far. Meanwhile, commenting on the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) election campaign for the Uva Provincial Council, he said they were contributing to hold a free and fair election. “We have instructed our party organisers and candidates to contribute to hold a free and fair election. There may have been a few incidents but the party leaders were not behind them. We don’t want a victory from an election held in an unjust manner,” he said. He added that the track record of holding elections was fair and commendable when it came to the SLFP and its allies. “The allegations made by Opposition parties are false. Our victory in this election is already evident.”
