SLFP to support Constitutional Assembly proposal

The Central Committee of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has decided to support the proposal for converting Parliament into a Constitutional Assembly to draft and approve a new constitution, political sources said.

The decision was taken when the Central Committee chaired by President Maithripala Sirisena assembled in the President’s official residence on Wednesday to discuss some important areas including reorganising the party and strengthening disciplinary procedures.

SLFP Senior Vice President Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva submitted the draft proposal of the Constitutional Assembly to the committee and former Minister Athauda Seneviratne seconded the proposal.

However a majority of SLFP members stressed the Constitutional Assembly should only be implemented according to Parliamentary Standing Orders.

All the members of the Central Committee except some Joint Opposition members were present, however SLFP advisors Chandrika Kumaratunga and Mahinda Rajapaksa did not attend the meeting. (CG)
