The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) says it will contest the next general elections under the leadership of President Maithripala Sirisena, who is the party Chairman. Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva told reporters in Kandy yesterday that the SLFP will gather support to work with Sirisena at the polls. He said that the SLFP had already decided to support President Maithripala Sirisena’s 100-day program in Parliament. The Opposition Leader said that, at the same time, the Opposition will also raise a voice against the mistakes being made by the Government, including post election violence. He said that despite the instructions issued by the President, post-election violence is still taking place with SLFP members the target of such violence. Nimal Siripala de Silva said that the issue of post-election violence will also be raised in Parliament by the Opposition in order to draw more attention from the Government. Meanwhile, the Opposition Leader said that the draft proposals of the Government for constitutional changes have not yet been shared with the Opposition. He said that once those proposals are shared, the Opposition will carefully study it and support it if it does not divide the country. The Opposition Leader said that the SLFP backs constitutional reforms but it will discuss the issue with other Opposition political parties and seek a consensus on such reforms, including on the Executive Presidential system. “We will look at reaching decisions which are best for the country and not an individual,” he said. On the allegations raised against some members of the former Government, Nimal Siripala de Silva said that if the allegations are backed with evidence then those SLFP members will be removed from the party.
