An ally of Sri Lanka’s governing United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has submitted its stance on the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) and its implementation.
SLMC General Secretary, M.T. Hasan Ali said the party’s views were handed to the Presidential Secretariat last week.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa last month called on all governing party coalition partners to hand over their stance on the LLRC recommendations.
According to Hasan Ali the SLMC in its report had noted the positive recommendations in the report, and had emphasized the need to address key issues concerning the Muslim community in the North and East. He has noted that Muslim persons in some areas in the East have been moved to make way for military installations and there were land issues with internally displaced Muslims yet to be resettled.
According to Hasan Ali, the delay in formulating a political settlement to the national question was not for the benefit of the country.
The SLMC has also proposed the strengthening of good governance, restoration of civilian administration and maintaining law and order in the country.
