Former Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader Somawansa Amarasinghe said yesterday he had resigned to form a new political party. Amarasinghe said that he felt the JVP was losing an opportunity it had to gain ground in local politics and so he decided to resign from the party. Amarasinghe was the International Affairs Secretary of the party at the time of his resignation. He said that he would look to take forward the policies of the JVP founder Rohana Wijeweera. Somawansa also said that any member of the JVP could join his new party but he would not extend an invitation to anyone. This is the second major split in the JVP since a group defected and formed the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP). (Colombo Gazette)
