The Leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Somawansa Amarasinghe and General Secretary Tilvin Silva were re-elected at a special convention held yesterday at Deberawewa, Tissamaharama.

Nine dissidents were expelled from the party’s Central Committee.

The 25-member Central Committee appointed yesterday includes 11 new members. Members of the politburo are to be finalised at the next meeting of the Central Committee.

Dissidents Dimuthu Atygala, Dimuthu Abeykoon, Waruna Rajapakse, Sameera Koswatta, Duminda Nagamuwa, E. Kularathna, Pubudu Jagoda, S.K. Subasinghe and Ajith Kumara were expelled from the Central Committee.

Gamini Rathnayake, Wasantha Piyatissa, Sunil Watagala, Samanmalee Gunasinghe, H.T. Dhammika, Chandika Adhikari, Wasantha Samarasinghe, Samantha Korale Arachchi, Sumathipala Manawadu, D.M. Wijeratne and Sisira Kumara Wasalathanthri were the new members appointed yesterday to the party’s Central Committee.

The convention unanimously approved four political proposals: Rallying around people against the draconian 18th Amendment, which paved the way to undemocratic dictatorial Rajapaksa family rule which suppress dissent; agitating to restore new socialist transformation and find a lasting solution to the country’s ethnic conflict; forming a progressive front under JVP leadership to defeat the present autocratic ruling which is taking the country towards a neo-liberal economy; and calling all communists to rally around to set up an international centre against imperialism were the four political proposals approved yesterday.
