South Korea congratulates Maithri, extends support

The Government of the Republic of Korea (South Korea) released a statement on 9 January, commending a peaceful and democratic conclusion to the presidential election in Sri Lanka and congratulating President Maithipala Sirisena for his election and inauguration as the President of Sri Lanka. The Government of South Korea wishes to further enhance friendly bilateral relations with the Government of Sri Lanka. The statement by the spokesperson and Deputy Minister for Public Relations of MOFA is as follows: The Government of the Republic of Korea welcomes the peaceful and democratic election held on 8 January with the active participation of the people of Sri Lanka. The ROK Government notes that the election marks an important milestone in the development of democracy in Sri Lanka. In addition, the Government of the Republic of Korea conveys its congratulations to presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena on his election as the next President of Sri Lanka. The Government of the Republic of Korea hopes that the new government of Sri Lanka will achieve continuous national development based on the support of the people of Sri Lanka expressed through the election, and will closely cooperate with the new government of Sri Lanka for the further development of friendship between the two countries.
