Senior journalist Kusal Perera has requested Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa in-writing to know the number of legislators who have submitted their asset and liabilities declaration as required by law.

Perera has also questioned whether the 117 MPs who signed the impeachment motion against the Chief Justice and the 11 members who probed the motion have submitted their declarations.

In his letter to the Speaker, Perera has thanked the parliamentarians who had signed the impeachment motion against the Chief Justice since it has brought forward the issue of submitting the assets and liabilities declaration.

Perera has also asked if the Speaker could ensure that it would be only members who have declared their assets and liabilities according to law, who would be allowed to debate the impeachment report handed over December 8, 2012.

He has noted that any citizen had the right to access the information in the assets declarations of public representatives on payment of a prescribed fee to the appropriate authority.
