Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament is to meet representatives from the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) today (21) for a discussion on the impeachment motion against the Chief Justice.

The BASL representatives would include the Association’s executive committee and the past presidents.

The meeting between the BASL members and the Speaker will take place in the Parliamentary complex.

The BASL is to request Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa to reconsider the impeachment motion against Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake. Dr. Bandaranayake has been summoned before the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC), probing the impeachment motion on Friday (23).

The 11-member PSC comprising seven Government members and four Opposition MPs will probe 14 counts of charges against Dr. Bandaranayake. President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva will appear for the Chief Justice at the PSC.

The Association recently passed a resolution calling on the President and the Speaker to reconsider the impeachment motion and sought meetings with the two officials to further discuss the matter.
