Special meet on fishermen issue

The Indian Central Government will make all efforts to protect the welfare of Tamil Nadu fishermen and their issues will be settled amicably at a special meeting to be convened shortly, India’s Union Minister for Shipping G.K. Vasan said. Talking to reporters in India, he said that frequent arrests of Tamil Nadu fishermen and destruction of their nets by Sri Lankan Navy were disturbing. To a question on retrieval of Katchatheevu, he said that the Congress did not have different opinion in this matter, The Hindu newspaper reported. “It should be retrieved and the Congress party will fight for it,” he said. Reacting to a proposed move to close the Vadamadurai railway station, he said that all efforts will be made to retain the station. The Centre had announced nine trains to Tamil Nadu in the recent railway budget, he pointed out. When asked about alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) for the ensuing polls, he declined to make any comment. (Colombo Gazette)
