The government will implement a special program to ensure the safety and handling of aircraft that will bring the heads of states and other dignitaries to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Colombo next month. The program has jointly been formulated by the Civil Aviation Services Authority, the Ministry of External Affairs and the CHOGM 2013 Taskforce Secretariat, Civil Aviation Services Authority Director General H.M.C. Nimalasiri said at a press briefing. According to the official, the program implemented with the assistance of the airport and civil aviation services is in accordance with international civil aviation services standards. The Civil Aviation Services Authority will be in charge of issuing permits for the landing of aircraft arriving for the summit. When the parking space for incoming VIP aircraft is filled at the Katunayake international airport, they will be diverted to the Mattala International Airport in Hambantota or to the Ratmalana airport, the official said. The authority expects a large number of private aircraft bringing in the dignitaries and some heads of state to fly in aboard their own special jets. The CHOGM 2013 Taskforce Secretariat will coordinate all ground transport for the Heads of Government and Foreign Ministers, along with their spouses.
