Speedy justice at low cost, people’s need: President

President Maithripala Sirisena says attention should be paid on ensuring speedy justice to the people who seek the assistance of the Judiciary. He added that we have also to consider the cost incurred to those who seek legal redress.

The President made these remarks at the launching ceremony of the book ‘Yali Mevena Aparadayak’ written by the Additional Solicitor General Sarath Jayamanne, President’s Counsel. The launch ceremony was held on 3 December at the Main Hall of the BMICH.

“Although the words such as democracy, freedom, similar opportunities, human rights and fundamental rights are popular, we should think about how far the people can achieve those practically, due to the cost the poor people have to pay for them,” the President said.

President Sirisena also stated that we have to think again whether the people in society including politicians, Government officers, those who engaged in legal profession, religious leaders and the ordinary citizens in the country are fulfilling their responsibilities. “If everybody fulfills their responsibility we will no more have issues in the society,” he said.

The first copy of the book, written on various fields to pay attention when a criminal case is taken for hearing in the court, was presented to the President by Jayamanne at this occasion.

Minister of Justice and Buddha Sasana Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, Chief Justice and Attorney General also participated in this occasion.
