Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage has predicted that a few Provincial Council election candidates of the opposition United National Party (UNP) will join the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPDF) in the weeks ahead. He said that the UNP Provincial Council candidates would address the public from the UPFA stages and express support. Addressing a press briefing held yesterday to clarify the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party position in regard of the political situation of the country, the Minister said that the opposition would record the harshest ever defeat at this election. Minister Aluthgamage said the opposition UNP would fail to win more than five seats of any of the Provincial Councils at this election. He also predicted that the Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) would fail to win a single seat in any of the three Provincial Councils for which the elections will be held on 21 September.
