Noting the resignation of the Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed and the swearing in of its Vice President Dr. Mohamed Waheed as the new President of the Maldives, Sri Lanka extended its fullest support to the new government of Maldives.
In a statement, the Government said it is of the view that the developments in that country are internal matters of the Maldives and expressed hope that all issues related to the change in the leadership will be resolved peacefully. “As the closest neighbour, Sri Lanka enjoys a cordial relationship with the government and people of the Maldives, and wishes to assure its fullest support and co-operation to the Government of the Maldives in its efforts to bring peace and stability to the country and prosperity to the Maldivian people,” the statement read.
The new President of Maldives, Dr. Waheed meanwhile, has assured that rule of law will be maintained in the Maldives. In a statement to the public after sworn-in, President Waheed said the rule of law must be upheld at any cost and asked the political parties to set aside their differences and join hands for the public interest.
The new President stressed that no law must be violated in any revenge against the past political leaders. (Colombo Page)
