Sri Lanka on Wednesday marked the International Human Rights Day at a national level as well as at a regional level focusing on the ongoing reconciliation process in the country. The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) held the national level program Wednesday, 10 December, at the Auditorium of Bandaranaike Center for International Studies (BCIS) at the BMICH, in Colombo, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year, the UN, encompassing the idea that every day is a human rights day, has declared the theme for the International Human Rights Day as ‘Human Rights 365’, to emphasise the fundamental proposition in the Universal Declaration that each one of humans, everywhere, at all times, is entitled to the full range of human rights. The HRCSL, highly concerned about the ongoing reconciliation process in Sri Lanka, has expanded the UN theme taking in to consideration the country’s current situation. The HRCSL has therefore decided to organise a multi view dialogue under the title of ‘Ensure the reconciliation and harmony through – Political Responsibility, Academic Responsibility, Judicial Responsibility, Government Responsibility, Civil society Responsibility, General Responsibility and Religious Leaders’ Responsibility’. Lionel Fernando, a noted civil servant in Sri Lanka, a renowned diplomat and a former peace facilitator delivered the keynote speech in relation to ‘The reconciliation process in Sri Lanka in the current context’. The event provided an opportunity for the participation of the three armed forces, police, educational institutes, number of government institutions, civil societies as well as youth representatives. The day was celebrated throughout Sri Lanka simultaneously with the direct coordination of the HRCSL regional offices.
