Sri Lanka Police holds 6th Interpol Counter Nuclear Smuggling Workshop

Untitled-3Sri Lanka Police in collaboration with Interpol General Secretariat (IPSG) inaugurated the 6th Interpol counter nuclear smuggling workshop under the leadership of Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara on Monday at Hilton Hotel in Colombo.

Delegates representing Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar and Nepal are participating the three-day workshop being held from 4-6 July in Colombo.

The Counter Nuclear Smuggling Workshop aims to raise awareness of the illicit trafficking of nuclear and other radioactive material and promote the establishment of national Counter Nuclear Smuggling teams.

It encourages countries to participate in INTERPOL’s Operation Fail Safe, which gathers information on individuals known or suspected to be involved in the illicit trafficking of nuclear or other radioactive material, and provide candidates for its system of warning notices through its National Central Bureaus (NCBs).

The Sri Lankan delegation comprised officers from Sri Lanka Customs, Sri Lanka Atomic Energetic Regulatory Commission, Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Terrorist Investigation Division (TID), and Police Special Task Force (STF).

Experts from the Interpol International Atomic Energetic Agency and officers of the US Department of State participated in the workshop.
