Sri Lanka to sign extradition treaty with Russia

The Sri Lankan Government is to sign an extradition treaty with Russia, an official said yesterday. An extradition treaty with Russia would enable Sri Lanka to request for the extradition of persons of concern who have engaged in illegal acts in the country and sought refuge in Russia, for criminal prosecution or execution of sentences. Sri Lanka’s Cabinet of Ministers approved the treaty on Thursday, according to Government Spokesman and Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella. Sri Lanka has signed an Extradition Treaty with the United States in 1999. The proposal to sign the treaty between the two countries, made by the President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Minister of Defence and Urban Development, received Cabinet approval.
