A tense situation was reported between the police and a group of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) members, including parliamentarians, in the North yesterday when attempts were made to survey land to build a new camp for the security forces.
TNA MP Suresh Premachandran and a group of TNA members were involved in a heated argument with the police at Mathakal, Senthankulam, a coastal area in the Jaffna peninsula, and at one point TNA Northern Provincial Council member M.K Sivajilingham attempted to damage equipment used by officials to survey the land.
The group led by Premachandran refused to move and allow the survey to be carried out, forcing the officials and police to eventually withdraw from the area.
During the protest the TNA MP challenged the police to arrest him or file a case against him after he stood his ground despite repeated demands by the police that he allows the officials to conduct the survey.
Premachandran later told reporters that the land was to be surveyed to construct a navy camp and if the camp is constructed it would disrupt the fishing activities of civilians in the area. (Colombo Gazette)
