The main opposition UNP yesterday accused the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) of being responsible for the deteriorating situation in the country today.
Addressing a media briefing in Colombo yesterday, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said the Marxist party was responsible for the present governance system because it had ushered this President into power in 2005.
Attanayake said that certain individuals in the JVP were blaming the UNP because they were reluctant to point fingers at the Government.
The UNP General Secretary was reacting to a statement made by JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva that the UNP had not really stood against the illegal impeachment of Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake. Silva said that the UNP had gone to keep company with the Government by attending the impeachment debate in Parliament last week.
Attananayake said that the UNP was only governed by its own agenda and would not be dictated in terms of policy by anyone else.
